The Ministry of Education said that it will not force a Paeroa school in north Waikato to re-enroll a boy who attacked a teacher and threatened students.

The boy was stood down last year from the Paeroa Central School after he attacked a teacher and threatened students that he wanted to cut them up with a knife.

The New Zealand Herald reported that the ministry had given the school until tomorrow (June 7, 2013) to lift the boy’s exclusion, saying that the student was “legally required to be enrolled, and his local school offers the best chance he has for gaining the stability he needs.”

The school’s principal Janet Jones said that the boy would not fit in a mainstream school. “We in particular can’t see why the ministry would re-enrol him in the school, and he would go into the class of the teacher he assaulted,” she told reporters. (http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/auckland/news/nbedu/1045617843-paeroa-school-refuses-to-re-enrol-boy)

“We don’t think any mainstream school in Paeroa’s the right place. This child needs specialist help and they have a number of alternatives,” she said.

According to Brian Coffey–the ministry’s special education group manager, the school’s and parent’s concerns are genuine. He said that the ministry hoped to enroll him again in the school, but they will not do that without the school’s agreement.

“Our plan is to have the boy attend the Thames Valley Alternative Education Centre, where he will get specialist support that will also be available to him at home,” Coffey said.

Coffey will meet with the school officials and parents tomorrow. “I will be listening very carefully to what everyone has to say and we will take it from there,” he said.

The School Trustees Association and parents of children in the school said that they support the principal’s stand–to protect students and teachers from the boy.

The boy’s family said that they want him to go to an alternative school where he can get the help he needs. His uncle explained that the boy has already attended 14 different schools, and is years behind on his education, therefore the difficulty relating to other students.

The date for a by-election for the Maori seat of Ikaroa-Rawhiti has been announced by Prime Minister John Key.

“I have been advised that, since the vacancy arising from Mr Horomia’s death has now been gazetted, it is appropriate to set a date for the by-election,” Key told reporters.

See: http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/43429-pm-announces-election-date.html

The by-election will take place on June 29.

The Prime Minister added that the nominations should be with the Electoral Commission by midday of June 5th. The last day for the return of the Writ is July 18th, a Thursday.

“Parekura was a dedicated politician of the people, and we intend to run a process which he would be proud of, and select a candidate who is a worthy successor to him” said Labour president Moira Coatsworth.

See: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/8648229/June-by-election-for-Horomias-seat

She added that “an impressive range of talented women and men” have already approached them, and they’re looking forward to the selection process.

Horomia–who had held the seat since 1999–passed away on April 29, 2013. He was 62 years old.

He was survived by his three sons Desmond, Wallace, and Turei; and two grandchildren. Family, friends, and fellow leaders have attended ceremonies, given tributes, and shared stories honoring the late MP. He has been laid to rest after a funeral service in Tolanga Bay.

“He was a man who came to parliament, was loyal to one party alone, and engendered emotions right across parliament,” said Key in the service.

Horomia’s final resting place is at the Kohimarama Cemetery, where he was buried next to his mother, who passed away in 1993.

Two police officers are being praised for saving a woman’s life today.

According to Kapiti-Mana Detective Inspector Paul Basham, the two officers “needed to take decisive action” and taser and shoot the suspect in order to save the life of a woman.

At around 5:30am today, May 2, police were called to a property at the Penguin Grove at the Porirua suburb of Waitangirua. Stuff.co.nz reported that police found a “‘distressed’ 49-year-old woman with a large cut on her arm was outside the house,” and when the officers went inside the house, where they saw a man on top of the woman’s sister, who appeared to have been stabbed in the neck.

One officer reportedly used a taser, and the second officer deployed a Glock pistol, firing a single shot. The 47-year-old male was wounded in the shoulder.

“From what we believed happened in that house this morning it is my belief my officers acted with a great deal of professionalism and a huge dollop of bravery and I have no doubt they saved the life of at least one woman,” Basham told ONE NEWS.

Video from The New Zealand Herald: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10881042

According to Porirua resident Bonnie Ngatai, police have previously visited the house for domestic incidents. She said that this is not fair to the community: “It is very sad, why do women or children have to be hurt, and again why do neighbours have to be upset with these sort of disturbances?”

The alleged suspect had surgery following the incident. The two women were also brought to the hospital for treatment.

Basham explained that police need to use their discretion in using forced treatment, based on the situation. “The application of lethal force is at the highest end of the continuum for us and it is a very difficult and challenging situation the officers found themselves in,” Basham said.

Basham said that the officers will get welfare and psychological support. The incident will get further investigation, reports said.

The big selling point is the ability to earn points on everyday purchases. This kind of loyalty programme has proven very popular with other retail driven credit cards, and given the scope of Countdowns operations and their very sucessful Onecard loyalty programme it would seem they have a ready made customer base.

Other features include:

55 days interest free

Access to Visa payWave

No additional annual fees for add-on card holders

I wouldn’t say it is breaking new ground, but for existing Countdown customers it is probably a pretty good option. I think I’d get more utility from the reward points than I would from Flybuys for instance. Definitely worth a look.

Housing shortage, we’ve been told has driven prices up in New Zealand, especially in Auckland. The market currently boasts low interest rates, and there is potential to make a good profit. The advice in the following article will give you some helpful tips on finding an affordable investment opportunity that has a good chance of becoming profitable.

Don’t just research the property you are interested in; research the surrounding neighbourhood, as well. If the neighborhood does not fit your living needs, you will be greatly disappointed with your home in the long run. If you do research before buying a home, it will help you to know what type of neighbours you will have. A useful site to visit www.zoodle.co.nz – you can purchase reports on house value and prices, neighbourhood statistics and more.

It is important to find your own professionals when purchasing a house. It could be tempting to consult with house inspectors or appraisers that the seller chooses, but do not do it. No one wants to spend money on services that can be had for free. Regardless, it is worth it to employ professionals that work only for you because you will be able to trust them. If you are sure you get the truth from the beginning, you can save yourself a lot of money and stress later on.

Do the required research on rental properties. If you are considering purchasing a rental property, you should not consider buying the property until you have completely reviewed the records for at least the past two years. This way you can determine whether the current owner is giving you honest and complete information with regards to the potential earnings from this investment. Also, the lender will want to see proof of said income before they’ll give you the property loan.

Don’t forget to shop around for the most competitive mortgage rates.

A professional home inspection is not required, but it is recommended. A professional inspection can tell you important facts about a property you are considering. Any number of things can go wrong in a home, and only a professional will be able to point out many of them. It is a worthy investment to save yourself a headache in the future.

Hiring an an attorney who specialises in foreclosure (mortgagee auctions/ mortgagee sales) real estate can really help to protect you from making costly mistakes. Complications can occur with pre- and regular foreclosures, so you need a legal representative to look out for your personal interests. The cost of a real estate attorney could save you from making a big mistake.

If you are a real estate agent, you should seriously consider sending out cards during the holidays and on anniversaries you share with your clients. Reminding them of their great experience with you is a great idea. Let them know that you make your income from referrals, and ask them if they could kind mention your name to people they know.

It is critical to be educated on mortgage loan terminology when purchasing a home. When you understand how your mortgage term affects your monthly payments, and how it will impact the total cost of your loan, you will minimize any future confusion.

When you are in the midst of a real estate transaction, prioritise your goals to get the best deal. Take the time to identify the issues that are on the table, then set your expectations that apply to each of them. Deal with your priorities first and consider some things as deal-breakers if they cannot be solved. Don’t expect to get everything that might possibly be on your list. Setting priorities helps you to determine which issues you are most willing to negotiate on.

Those who are wise and jump into this swirling market should follow the above article closely. It will help you avoid trouble and walk away with real estate that is under-priced and growing constantly in value. The key is to purchase the property and hold until the time is right before you make your big move.

Graduating from college means that you’re on your way to becoming more independent. Most students will no longer have their family and university insurance after graduation, so it’s time to go look for for a new one now. Here are some insurance suggestions that you should consider getting.

Insurance provided by the employer – Medical care is given by most companies, so if you are getting a job, you will most likely be offered one. Most companies, however, would be very limited with the benefits, so ask the company about the restrictions of the plan that you’re getting. Get to know the scope and limitations–is there a drug formulary? Does it include dental care? How wide is the disability coverage? Set a meeting with your HR representative to get to know what the insurance company offers.

Automobile Insurance – If you’re planning to get a car, you have to get yourself a car insurance (in most places, you will really have to choice, as the government requires every car owner to get one). There will be so many options to choose from, so make sure that you’ve got everything all mapped out before you sign anything. Most plans would usually depend on you location and activities–for instance, if you’re driving in an urban area, you will have to pay a bigger premium than those who live in small towns. If you’re under 30 and just recently graduated, you may be able to qualify for a discount. It might also be a good time to look into Accident Recovery Insurance. You can read more about it – http://www.aa.co.nz/insurance/life-insurance/life-insurance-policies/accident-recovery-insurance/.

International Insurance Plans – Many graduates would like to take some time off before venturing into the adult world. Before applying for a job, they’ll plan to see the world first. If you will be doing a lot of traveling or planning to get some post-grad courses abroad, it would be wise for you to get a travel health insurance. The regular insurance will usually be restricted to one’s country, so you’ll have to apply for the one that will cover health expenses wherever you are in the world.

Short-term Insurance – This is for those who are planning to take some time off before applying for a job. A short-term health insurance could cover 6 months to one year, and is more affordable than getting the full package. These are usually limited in coverage, and would just cover emergencies. The good thing about this is if you get a job that offers insurance, they will not overlap and you will not have to be tied to a plan.

Long-term Insurance – This one could be one of the most expensive one on the list, but it also has the most benefits. If your job won’t have an insurance plan for you, or if you think you need to have a wider coverage, this option is the best investment. You may have to pay bigger premiums, but you can sleep better at night knowing that all your medical and emergency needs are taken care of.

Shopping for a health insurance could be overwhelming, with all the options available, so you need to take your time and read everything that’s included in the policy. Evaluate your lifestyle and stay focused on what fits your needs and budget for you to find the coverage that you need.

There are so many models, prices, shapes, and sizes to choose from, so you have to pay close attention to your needs. To help you get started, here are some of the most important features and qualities that you should look for.

Type

There are different types of dishwashers out there, and some of the most common ones you’ll come across are: the Built-in dishwasher, which is installed on the kitchen counter; the Drawer dishwasher, which has separate upper and lower drawers; the Integrated dishwasher, which is designed in a way that would conceal the device as a cabinet door; and the Free-Standing or Portable dishwasher, which doesn’t need special plumbing installation. Assess your daily activities and see which among these will work best for you. Check out the different types of dishwashers available at http://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/kitchen-laundry-appliances/dishwashers/c100007-c5455-p1.html

Energy-efficiency

Dishwashers with an Energy Star rating are proven to be 10% more energy efficient and 20% more water-efficient compared to standard models. With this environment-friendly rating, you will be able to have a new and improved water filtration system, as well as soil sensors that will thoroughly clean dishes with minimum water use. You won’t notice the difference immediately, but because you’ll have less energy consumption, you will be able to have extra savings annually. You can also look for the Energy Guide label and take note of the numbers–these will provide you with an estimate of how much you’ll be able to spend on the device every year.

Food disposal

Buying a dishwasher with a hard-food disposal/filter feature will allow you to skip the process of pre-rinsing the dishes before the washing process. This will make you conserve water and save time–all you need to do is put everything in the washer and let the device do the job for you.

Racks

Consider the dishwasher’s interior–your choice depends on how many dishes you have to wash every day. If you’re in a big household, opt for the three-rack models so you’ll be able to wash everything at once. Also, it’s best to go for models that have adjustable racks that can conveniently detach if you need to put bigger items inside.

Warranty / service plan

Repairs could cost you hundreds of dollars, so make sure that the model that you purchase has a good maintenance plan (consultation, repairs, parts replacement) that won’t make you worry about shelling out your hard-earned money in case your dishwasher unexpectedly conks out.

Design

This is something that many buyers neglect to consider. Aside from all the tips above, you should also contemplate on the aesthetic aspect of the product. Look at your kitchen and see which color will best work with your design. You don’t want to end up with something that would create an eyesore in your space. Also, see if you’ll be able to understand all the buttons and commands–there are many dishwasher controls out there that have confusing controls and switches that aren’t user-friendly.

The key to arriving at the best product is to make sure that you take a closer look at all the features and specs. Consider these tips before you make a purchase, and don’t rush!

The first things that you must arrange from home before traveling is your accommodations (especially if you are traveling with kids). Make sure reservations have been made before you leave – make sure that the accommodation is suitable for your family. Below are tips that will make your hotel stay go as smoothly as possible.

Do Your Research:

Take some time in looking for a place to stay. By researching online, you will be able to find a place that would be enjoyed by both you and your kids. Check out different hotel websites and look at the photos provided (reading up on reviews will go a long way as well)–would your kids have a place to play? Will there be child-friendly activities and amenities (swimming pool, playground, library, etc)? Is the room big enough for the whole family? Explore different places and send an email to the management if you have additional questions. If you’re traveling with a baby, also ask the hotel if they would be able to provide a crib so you don’t have to bring one with you. A good place to start is with TripAdvisor.

Hotel Location:

Choose one that preferably close to amenities such as transport, shopping and attractions. For example, if you were visiting Auckland, New Zealand, you may wish to stay in a centrally located family-friendly hotel such as The Sebel Suites Auckland (for example) – which is close to a number of bars and restaurant cafe shops, transportation such ferry services to to Waiheke Island and Rangitoto, and shopping. Most good hotel have a list of leisure and activities information available on their website.

Hotel Facilities:

If possible, look for hotels with swimming pool, games rooms and some even have Kid Clubs.
Take something familiar (for the really young ones):

It’s possible that children will have a difficult time adjusting to a new environment. In order to make them feel at home, take something that would remind them of home–a blanket, a pillow, a stuffed toy, or any other item that they love. This will make them less anxious, and would let them sleep better at night.

Drinks and Snacks:

BYO (bring your own). This way, you are not having to rely on the mini-bar in your room (which can be quite costly). Look for the nearest convenient store from your hotel to stock up on supplies.
Rearrange some furniture:

If your child is active and likes to explore, it’s best if you rearrange some items in the room in such a way that he/she won’t reach it. Some of the most common items are: glasses, cups, jars, coffee maker, and toiletries (plastic bags, hair dryers, shampoos, soap, etc).

You must be extra careful and attentive if you have kids with you, so see to it that you do all the necessary preparations before you leave. Traveling with children will be an amazing and educational experience, so keep all of these tips in mind before and while you stay at the hotel, and have a memorable and hassle-free vacation!

Going on a family vacation could be very stressful if you don’t plan ahead. In order to find a place that will make all family members happy, you need to do some careful research. Here’s a guide that would walk you through the hotel-choosing process; steps that would lead you to great deals and quality service.

1. Evaluate your budget – Before you look at different hotels, you need to take a look at your budget first. The best way to deal with this is to first compute your budget for the trip’s priorities–things like sightseeing activities, transportation, and food. Having an idea of these major expenses will help you narrow things down and know how much money you can spend in a hotel.

2. Choosing a hotel -A good place to start is usually, online. For example, if you are heading to Auckland, New Zealand, you may want to search for ‘budget hotels nz’ or better yet, ‘budget hotels auckland‘.

3. Choose hotels that are near the places you’re visiting – Getting an accommodation near the places you’re visiting will save you time and transportation money. Hotels will usually give you an estimate of their distance from famous attractions and activities, so it shouldn’t be hard for you to pick the best one. Also take note of transportation access–choosing a place near trains, buses, subways will also make getting around very easy for you.

4. Travelling with children? – If you’re traveling with babies or toddlers, consider getting a child-proof room. There are hotels that offer rooms with child-friendly set-ups like rounded furniture, corner guards, baby gate, bed rails, etc., so if you want to make sure that your kid is safe, book a room that has these features. You could also bring your own child-proofing equipment–one of the most important items that will go a long way is a masking/duct tape, which will be used for sealing windows, doors, and sharp corners.

5. Gather reviews – Tips and recommendations will be some of the most helpful things that will help you with your decision. Look at guide books (make sure they’re up-to-date), visit websites, and ask advice from family and friends who have been to where you’re going. Their advice will make it easier for you to decide.

Since there is so much more involved you have to be very mindful. Get some help if you need it so you will not end up getting the short end of the stick.

Make sure to define specific objectives that you want to instill before you make your purchase. Will you be trying to resell this land to make a profit? Are you going to be occupying this area upon purchase? Having answers to these questions will help to maximize your overall investment.

When making the final decision on purchasing a commercial property, consider any environmental problems you may encounter. Hazardous waste problems can be a cause of concern. If you are the owner of the property, you have the responsibility for any problems that arise, even if they are not your fault. Environmental cleanup and disposal costs are extremely expensive. Keep this in mind.

As you prepare to list and sell your commercial property, you should first take the time to familiarize yourself with zoning regulations and all possible commercial uses for the property itself. This will allow you to be more confident as you discuss details and attributes with your prospective buyers.

To get a great deal on purchasing commercial real estate, look for very motivated sellers who are willing to part with their properties below market value. It is important to find someone who is desperate or motivated, because in real estate one who is in need is a lot more likely to negotiate than someone who isn’t desperate to part with their property.

Buying commercial real estate properties does not have to be difficult. If you hire a knowledgeable real estate agent, you should be able to find a great property that has a great income potential. It is important to consider the condition and the location of the property before making a final decision on the purchase. Making use of qualified mortgage brokers will save you time and money as they can always find the best deal on finance.

If you are buying or selling a house, there will be a lot of contracts to sign. Make sure you are aware of what you are putting your name on. These contracts are legally binding, and you could be making a large mistake and causing yourself a huge headache if you don’t take this seriously.

When shopping for commercial real estate, using a property broker will save you a great deal of money and time. The broker will do a good bit of the grunt work for you and will be able to broker a better deal for you as they have a better knowledge about the market and more information about it.

To make sure you get the most out of any apartment you purchase, look for one that offers at least 10 units. The more units your apartment offers, the cheaper each unit will be to maintain as a whole. Managing a large amount of units doesn’t require much more work than managing only a few does, so it’s best to buy a big building and maximize your potential profits.

Just like with any real estate deal, you have to be diligent when dealing with commercial real estate. You also have to make sure to take your time and think things through very carefully. Being too hasty will result in your transaction not running as smoothly as it could.
